for Jewish Spiritual Direction

Becoming A Spiritual Director

A training program cannot “make” a person into a spiritual guide. One discovers a God-given gift for this work, recognized in the course of one’s life. Training can help gifted individuals cultivate the inner qualities, knowledge and skills that will allow them to offer effective and deeply Jewish guidance to others.

The Morei Derekh Program supports preparation for Jewish spiritual guides in four fundamental areas of learning and growth:

  • Studying the evolving theory of Jewish Spiritual Direction, and learning the art of “holy listening.”
  • Deepening one’s own spiritual life and connection to the divine.
  • Cultivating the middot (holy qualities of soul) and working with the obstacles that obscure God-awareness and holy living.
  • Actively pursuing one’s own path of Jewish learning, discovery, and practice so that one’s guidance is grounded in Jewish tradition and wisdom.

Who Should Apply

If you are a rabbi, cantor, Jewish educator, chaplain, psychotherapist or community leader and you find that people often share their experiences of the holy with you, this training will help you to more effectively guide individuals as they explore their connection to the divine. Individuals not trained in these professions may also feel called to companion others on their spiritual journeys.

Our application for the next Morei Derekh cohort is available now. Please go to the Morei Derekh page for more information about the program and to download the application.
